R.J. was a graduate of the Nazareth Academy class of 1995 and was a baseball player all four years. Tragically, he passed away on October 3, 2001, in a construction accident. He was a proud member of Illinois Council of Carpenter’s Local 13.
Always the life of the party as well as the first to help someone in need, R.J. was an amazing son, brother, cousin, and friend. He inspired countless smiles, laughs and good times for those that had the honor of being in his presence.
The Sanders family established this memorial scholarship to benefit a member of the Nazareth student community in financial need. Past recipients have been able to complete the outstanding academic program at Nazareth Academy and continue on to college.
In 2003, the R.J. Sanders Baseball Field was built and dedicated on the campus of Nazareth Academy College Prep High School in LaGrange Park, Illinois.
Nazareth's baseball team has enjoyed 20 years of playing on R.J. Sanders Field, including the 2022 and 2023 IHSA Class 3A State Championship teams.
In 2024, renovations and updates were completed which included a fully turfed athletic field. This will enable Nazareth's ever-growing fall and spring sports programs to also utilize the field for practice as well as elevate the athletic experience for the baseball program.
